Ohio State assistant coach Zach Smith won Scout.com's Big Ten recruiter of the year award, today. During performance reviews, Urban Meyer challenged the young coach to recruit better. Smith responded by adding commitments from Jalyn Holmes and Johnnie Dixon. He also helped the Buckeyes land commitments from four-stars Noah Brown and Terry McLaurin.
Urban Meyer and Mark Pantoni both spoke highly of the 29 year old coach. Meyer spent a couple of minutes during the National Signing Day press conference praising Smith for his relationship building, while mentioning a story of Jalyn Holmes facetiming Smith's son during Meyer's in-home visit. Pantoni mentioned that at first he wasn't confident about landing Johnnie Dixon, but Smith was able to reel in the highly rated prospect.
With the addition of Larry Johnson Sr., Ohio State will have Smith focus on recruiting Florida. Since the hire, he has spent two weeks building relationships in the State of Florida.
