I'm sure none of our morally sound readers ever gamble, but Jason and I thought it would be fun to take a peek at the week's biggest games and offer our picks against the spread. We'll track our results as the season goes on to see which of us would've been homeless first if this weren't just a simulation.
To spice it up a little, we'll bring in a famous guest picker each week to see how they stack up. Since Louis Irizarry's in town, we've got him the fold as our first guest. Feel free to offer your picks in the comments if you think you've got a lock that the 11W community must be aware of.
Now on to the picks:
Thursday: LSU (-17 1/2) @ Mississippi State (ESPN 8:00) The Tigers head to Starkville looking to continue their domination of MSU. In the last 6 contests, LSU is 6-0 outscoring the Bulldogs 250-43 including 48-17 last year and a 51-0 whuppin' in 2004. Which reminds me...How in the world does Sylvester Croom keep his job? Wait. Don't answer that.
Chris: I'll take LSU to cover, 31-13. Jason: I think the Tigers will sputter a little, but still cover 27-6. Irizarry: Anybody seen my glock?, er, I mean I'll take LSU and give the points.
Friday: Washington (-3) @ Syracuse (ESPN 8:00) This contest features two young quarterbacks who have been given the keys to some janky offenses. Jake Locker is the Husky phenom that many, including ASU coach Dennis Erickson, are saying will turn around the stagnant program while sophomore Andrew Robinson is being counted on to revive a Syracuse program that's been on life support longer than Terri Schaivo. Honestly, we really only put this game on the list since we'll likely tune in to get a little advanced scouting on the Huskies.
Chris: Huskies 27, 'Cuse 21. No way I'm betting on Syracuse unless Boeheim's got the 2-3 zone working. Jason: The Huskies will be looking two weeks ahead and the Dome will be rocking. I like Syracuse to win outright 31-28. Irizarry: I stole a phat Syracuse hoodie and Starter jacket from Meijer back in middle school so I'm taking the 'Cuse, baby!
Saturday: Georgia Tech (+3) @ Notre Dame (NBC 3:30) Just typing about the Irish gives me dookie cramps. We all know why, but it's tiresome seeing such a mediocre program grab so many headlines. I guess I'll pay attention just so I can truly enjoy watching this team end up with a losing record. Good luck to Weis as he attempts to install new players at every offensive skill position and most of his offensive line. That said, the Irish still might have enough to beat the always overrated Jackets.
Chris: Tech 24, Irish 2 Jason: This is Tashard Choice's coming out party for the '07 Heisman race. The Irish pull it out, but it will be close: 21-20. Irizarry: I'll take Notre Dame because I like how Charlie Weis looks like he's had the munchies since '65. That reminds me, anybody wanna buy some weed?
