It's the latest of a flurry of reports that say Harbaugh, who has coached the NFL's San Francisco 49ers since 2011, will head to Ann Arbor.
If or when the hiring indeed happens, Harbaugh is expected to help rally the Wolverines out of unprecedented turmoil.
Harbaugh played quarterback at Michigan in the mid to late 1980s before playing 14 years in the NFL, notably for the Chicago Bears among other teams.
In his last stint as a college head coach, Harbaugh turned Stanford into a Pac-12 and college football power from 2007-10.
