UPDATE (5:58 p.m.): Sark has checked himself into treatment. Get well soon, man.

Steve Sarkisian is no longer head football coach at the University of Southern California.

The beleaguered coach was given a leave of duty by athletic director Pat Haden on Sunday after Sark reportedly showing up drunk to work.

LATimes.com released a detailed report of Sarkisian's struggles with alcohol going back to his days at Washington on Monday. It might have left USC with no other option.

From USCTrojans.com

"After careful consideration of what is in the best interest of the university and our student-athletes, I have made the decision to terminate Steve Sarkisian, effective immediately.

"I want to thank Clay Helton for stepping into the interim head coach role, and I want to add how proud I am of our coaching staff and players and the way they are responding to this difficult situation.

"Through all of this we remain concerned for Steve and hope that it will give him the opportunity to focus on his personal well being."

Sarkisian, in his second year, will finish with a 12-6 record at USC. The Trojans head to Notre Dame on Saturday.
