Felt compelled to share a piece on everyone's favorite quarterback and the man behind the scenes in Troy's football experience at Ohio State. Having had the pleasure of knowing Joe Daniels and the Daniels family, there's no question that that man -- a resume proven legend of coaching -- is everything Troy describes and more. People Joe coached included names like a college aged Dan Marino at Pitt, Brian Sipe in Cleveland with the Browns and Jim Kelly in Buffalo with the Bills.
I don't think we really realized how good we had it with Coach Daniels. We had clutch quarterback play for years from unheralded recruits/players who fit Tressel's mold and got the job done for us. Coach Daniels was instrumental in bringing the elite talent of Terrelle Pryor to Ohio State, but unfortunately didn't get the chance to coach and mentor him when he arrived at Ohio State due to health issues when he was forced to take a reduced role and ultimately leave the sideline. Coach tragically died of cancer shortly thereafter in 2011. I only shudder to think what could have been with having Coach Daniels paired up with TP and his elite talent and strong personality.
Joe Daniels was an incredible coach. Joe was also an even better husband, father and all around family man. On top of those reasons, he's a man that we should all take a moment to recognize, because for much of his time at Ohio State, he was the man that didn't get the credit for coaching and mentoring athletes playing the most important position in sports at our beloved university.
How Firm Thy Friendship. RIP Coach Daniels.
