As a team captain during his senior year (1979), Laughlin (along with Ernie Andria) had a share in a blocked punt against Michigan during the final
moments of the game, which was returned for a touchdown by Todd Bell. The play put the Buckeyes on top 18-15, sending the team to the 1980 Rose Bowl.He was the eighth pick in the 4th round of the 1980 NFL Draft (91st overall) by the Atlanta Falcons.
