This is the "OH PLEASE LET THIS SERVER NOT CATCH ON FIRE MONDAY NIGHT" release.
Basically, we're on two new servers – both 64GB of RAM and 20 cores each, but as a site, we're growing incredibly fast. We had a monster month in January, for obvious reasons and we're matching that traffic now. So we have that and the fact we're pushing up against the limits of what Drupal can do.
As such, a lot of these updates are performance-related. Some will be permanent. Some will only be temporary. In some cases, we had to make a hard choice between usability and keeping the lights on for Monday night (Spoiler: Helmet Stickers especially in open threads, are the suck when it comes to performance).
The details:
- We now have the ability to disable comment voting for certain things. We will do this for high noise, low signal stuff like open threads on the front page, contest and the like. Thanks for understanding our reasons for doing so.
- Comments in forums are paged at 50 comments per page. Other comments are paged as well, but with different page sizes. This is something we'd love to make temporary if possible.
- Several small tweaks to article layout on mobile devices.
Please don't use this thread to recommend features. Our No. 1 focus right now – aside from putting out great content – is performance/uptime. Once we get this ironed out, we'll circle back and do some of the cooler usability stuff on our plate.
Oh, and one final pro tip: If the site is ever really slow for you and you just want to read articles, log out or pop a private browsing/incognito window. It's always super-fast for anonymous visitors because pages are cached for them.
