Ohio State excellence is not exclusive to the football field or the basketball court. Around the Oval is our way of keeping you informed of the amazing things happening with the other 34 varsity sports on campus.
Buckeyes add duke transfer sierra calhoun
Over the weekend, it was announced that sophomore guard Sierra Calhoun has transferred to and signed with Ohio State. Last season, she played 13 games at Duke before leaving the program. She comes into Ohio State with three seasons of eligibility remaining, but will have to sit out for the upcoming 2015 season per NCAA transfer rules.
Calhoun was a highly touted recruit in the 2014 class. She was the seventh ranked player in the country, a McDonald's All-American, and nearly averaged a double-double with points and rebounds her senior year. The thought is that Calhoun will be the replacement for senior guard Ameryst Alston who graduates after this season. That will leave a very talented backcourt of Kelsey Mitchell and Sierra Calhoun.
This signing is huge for a program that seems is perennially on the cusp of national prominence. This signing, along with the other talented young players on the roster, will hopefully be what pushes the team over the edge and keeps them there.
Track teams prepare for NCAA championship
In the final poll before the NCAA Championships, both the men and women's track teams received their highest rankings in years. After an impressive East prelims, the men's team jumped 16 spots from 33rd to 16th— their highest ranking in 9 seasons. The women's team jumped 10 spots to 27th, giving them their highest ranking in 3 years.
This could provide a momentum boost to the teams as they head into the NCAA Championships this week. They will be competing in the following events:
Men:
- Donovan Robertson - men's 110-meter hurdles
- Timothy Faust - men's 200-meter dash
- LaMar Bruton - men's 400-meter dash
- Antonio Blanks - men's 400-meter hurdles
- Jackson Neff - men's 3000-meter steeplechase
- J.C. Murasky - men's shot put
- Zack Bazile - men's long jump
- Men's 4x400-meter relay
Women:
- Aisha Cavin - women's 200-meter dash
- SoSo Walker - women's 400-meter dash
- Aaliyah Barnes - women's 400-meter dash
- Katie Borchers - women's 800-meter run
- Carly Pendleton - women's discus
- Women's 4x100-meter relay
- Women's 4x400-meter relay
The NCAA Championships will be held in Eugene Oregon June 10-13.
men's capital one Cup
The Buckeyes chances of winning the Men's Capital One Cup took a major hit this week.
Below are the current rankings and the scenarios I outlined last week that Ohio State had to avoid in order to win the cup:
1. Ohio State | 93.5 |
2. Virginia | 89 |
3. Denver | 72 |
4. Duke | 71 |
5. Notre Dame | 65 |
6. Oregon | 61 |
7. North Dakota State | 60 |
8. UCLA | 59 |
9. Providence | 50 |
10. TCU | 42 |
- A top-3 finish for the Oregon men's track team: This is still not out of the realm of possibility as the NCAA Championships do not begin until Wednesday.
-
A national championship or runner up finish for UCLA in baseball. This will not happen. UCLA, who was a favorite by many to win the entire tournament, did not make it out of their regional - A top-10 finish for Virginia in baseball. This, unfortunately, is all but locked up. Virginia, who was not picked by many to even advance out of their region, has not lost a game in the NCAA Tournament. They went undefeated in their regional play, and swept the best of three series in the super-regional. They are now one of eight teams remaining, and appear to have locked up a final top-10 ranking in the polls.
Unless the men's track team can score enough points to offset Virginia's top-10 baseball finish (this is incredibly unlikely), there will be no cup of any sorts for the Ohio State athletic program this year.
