Ohio State excellence is not exclusive to the football field or the basketball court. Around the Oval is our way of keeping you informed of the amazing things happening with the other 34 varsity sports on campus.

Today, the Ohio State football team kicks off against Virginia tech. As we prepare for that matchup, let's check up on how the rest of the athletic program fared this week.

volleyball team dominates

This weekend, Ohio State hosted their annual Koehl Classic. Quite simply, they dominated.

The Buckeyes had three matches, one against Northern Illinois and two against 14th ranked Florida State. They emerged victorious in all three. Ohio State dominated throughout every match in the  classic, winning their seventh tournament title in the past 11 years.

The 22nd ranked Buckeyes will look to improve upon that ranking as they take on the 16th ranked Arizona Wildcats as part of next weekend's Blackbird Invitational. Apart from the team's regular season opening hiccup against Wyoming, the team has looking dominant thus far.

women's soccer still undefeated

The Buckeyes put their undefeated record to the test against Florida International, and they came out victorious, thanks again to the exceptional efforts of junior forward Nichelle Prince.

Nichelle Prince's early goal set the tone for the Buckeye team to go on and win the match 3-1, improving their undefeated record (4-0-1) and likely improving on their 14th ranking.

The Buckeyes host two matches against Bucknel and West Virginia before heading into conference play the week after.

women's field hockey falls

The women's field hockey program has shown promise this season, coming close in a match against the reigning national player of the year. However, that promise has not quite materialized.

The Buckeyes' had a huge match against No. 11 Wake Forest this weekend, and they fell 3-2 in overtime.

Although the team responded with a 5-0 win against Missouri State, the Wake Forest loss is still hurtful. The team has played two matches against highly competitive teams, and has lost them both (Albany, and Wake Forest).

Ohio State is on the verge of being a national powerhouse, but losses against competitive teams such as Albany and Wake Forest do not help the teams' national perception. They'll have more chances to prove themselves as the season goes on, as there are still four ranked teams remaining on their schedule, starting with No. 7 Penn State.
