No. 1 Maryland defeated No. 2 Ohio State, 10-9, for the Big Ten men's lacrosse championship Saturday night in Jesse Owens Stadium. It was Maryland's second conference title in as many years.
The hometown crowd at Jesse Ownes Memorial Stadium wasn't enough to spur the local team to victory, as it went down to the Terrapins in the opening minutes.
The teams went into halftime deadlocked at four goals a piece and traded goals throughout the second half.
Tied at 8-8 a piece, Maryland junior midfielder Connor Kelly split the Ohio State defense and buried a goal to make it 9-8 Terrapins. The Easton, Conn. native spiced his celebration with some trash talk and gesticulation towards the scoreboard.
After a Buckeye rebuttal, Terrapin senior attacker Colin Heacock bulldozed Buckeye midfielder Logan Maccani before his first goal of the night made it 10-9 with three minutes left in the game.
It proved to be the game-winner.
