Major was an assistant at Ohio State under Matta from 2004-10 and, before that, at Xavier from 2001-04. He took over as the Charlotte head coach prior to the 2010-11 season and in four-plus seasons at the helm, Major was 67-70 as head coach of the 49ers. He stepped away from the position during the 2014-15 season due to health reasons.
This is the second former Matta assistant to return to Ohio State this offseason. The Buckeyes also brought back Chris Jent to replace Jeff Boals as an assistant coach after Boals left to be the head coach at Stony Brook.
Ohio State did not immediately reply for a request for comment confirming the hiring of Major.
