Welcome to The Hurry-Up, which runs Sunday through Thursday, serving as your last stop for recruiting news and notes nightly. We'll recap the day as it happened and preview the days ahead while keeping our ear to the ground on the Ohio State recruiting scene.
MORE ON BURRELL DECISON
Ohio State got a big commitment on board for the 2015 class as offensive lineman Matt Burrell announced his decision to commit to Ohio State last night. Burrell is a tremendous talent and should be a good fit for Urban Meyer and Ed Warinner among the offensive line. Many project him to play guard at the next level. One of Matt's coaches had high praise for the player and kid Ohio State is getting.
"Matt is the type of kid that wants to play every position," Burrell's coach John Harris told Eleven Warriors. "Before practice he would take snaps from center just to learn the position of center. He wanted to know how to play every position on the field. He would do anything to be successful on the football field, he is never going to talk back either. If Ohio State asks him to play center, guard, or tackle; it doesn't matter he would play any of those. He likes to be coached."
Harris also had high praise for the type of person Matt was off the field as well. He talked about how important school is to Matt.
"Matt is very mature and book smart," Harris said. "He is going to Ohio State to play football and graduate."
It's evident that Harris had a tremendous amount of praise for Burrell. He said how much he is going to miss him and how the next man taking his spot has big shoes to fill. High praise for a big-time prospect.
DAVIS MIAMI VISIT RECAP
Over the past weekend, Ohio State commitment Carlton Davis visited Miami, the first of at least a pair of planned trips other than Columbus for the Miami Norland defensive back. The visit was, according to Davis, not quite as he'd hoped.
"It was ok," Davis told Eleven Warriors of his trip. "Not what I expected."
Beyond that, Davis wouldn't expound on the trip, but trip to Columbus in two weeks for his official to Ohio State could end up being a bigger deal than most had thought before. Could Davis, who's almost been discounted since his commitment, actually end up signing with the Buckeyes come February?
"Davis always seemed like a possible decommit," one source inside Ohio State shared with 11W. "But, he's still with us and he comes up next weekend."
Another source was equally — and suddenly — optimistic.
"It's weird, but he's a guy we've wanted for a while but never felt like was going to end up here," the second source said. "We really like him though, he can be a big time player if he comes up here buys into the program quickly. Miami was the one place that really concerned us but we know he's looking at Texas too. Right now, I think he comes up for Michigan and we close the deal."
HAUSMANN PREPARES FOR ST. XAVIER
The country's third-ranked tight end in 2016, Cincinnati Moeller's Jake Hausmann, is preparing for a rematch that will put two of Cincinnati's top programs against one another this weekend. The Crusaders will go head-to-head against Ohio State commit Justin Hilliard and St. Xavier. An earlier season matchup between ended in a 13-7 Moeller win, but St. X has been playing it's best football of the year in recent weeks.
"We should be ready for St. Xavier," Hausmann told 11W. "They're on a roll, but we think we think we can win again. We'll have our deep threat back that we didn't have the first time we played them, so hopefully he can open up some other things in our offense."
As of now, Hausmann is planning to be in Columbus when Ohio State takes on Michigan, but that could change if things go as he hopes this Saturday.
"If we win this Saturday," he said. "There's not much of a chance I'd be able to make it for The Game because we'll be playing in the state semifinals."
The 6-foot-5, 235-pound Hausmann says things with the Buckeyes are as good as ever, although he's enjoyed the chance to get lost in the football season and focus less on recruiting.
"It's great, recruiting is really in a good place right now," he added. "I keep in constant contact with Ohio State. Nothing has changed really there, they keep talking about their need for tight ends."
FARRELL HAS VISIT PLANS
While Hausmann's visit for late November is up in the air, another of the top tight ends in Ohio, Perry's Luke Farrell, is certain he'll be there.
"I'm taking two more visits in November," Farrell told 11W. "I'm going to Michigan State on November 22nd and Ohio State on November 29th versus Michigan."
Farrell's junior season ended two weeks ago in a tough loss to Cleveland Benedictine. The Buckeyes were impressed by what they saw that night, according to Farrell.
"I talked to (Urban) Meyer last week on the phone," he said. "They've been impressed by my highlights that they've seen and my performance against Benedictine. I think (Meyer) wants to come up for a basketball game."
As he noted, Farrell is starting his junior year of basketball. With hoops around the corner, he says recruiting is likely to end up on the back burner. A player once thought likely to make an early decision, Farrell isn't sure what the future holds at this point.
"I don't have a timeline for a choice," Farrell added. "I probably won't be doing much recruiting stuff in the spring. I'll just focus on lifting and doing football workouts. "
