NEW DEFENSIVE TACKLE OFFER
I know what you're thinking about the latest offer to defensive tackle Rob Landers, I do.
"Jeremy, why — why — would Ohio State offer a new defensive tackle when Neville Gallimore just visited, Christian Wilkins is visiting right meow and Terry Beckner, Jr. is planning a visit next month? WHY OH WHY WOULD THEY OFFER A THREE-STAR DEFENSIVE TACKLE!?"
So, Buckeye fans, let me begin my rebuttal by offering this one bit of advice: reeee-lax. Do you remember the general mood of this place back in April? For the second straight year Michigan (and this year Penn State) were "dominating" Ohio State on the ol' crootin' trail and many of you were worrying quite a bit. The bottom line is now and was then to just sit back and enjoy the ride. Urban Meyer and his staff know exactly what they're doing they never give panic offers.
Here's the deal on Landers, the 6-foot-2, 295-pounder from Huber Heights (Wayne), who is currently committed to West Virginia. He's quick. He's nasty. He was a wrecking ball throughout the Division I playoffs and he's a player that for some reason has flown under the recruiting radar. Not anymore.
The important thing to know is that if Landers commits to Ohio State it means exactly nothing in regards to the Buckeyes pursuit of the aforementioned trio of defensive tackles. If they can take two more true defensive lineman, they'd love to. Right now, Landers will take a few days and absorb how his visit to Columbus went. He still plans on taking his official visit to West Virginia next month, so no commitment to the Buckeyes is imminent. Will the long-standing relationship with the Mountaineers be enough to stave off the dream of playing at Ohio State?
PORTER GUSTIN STILL THINKING ABOUT OSU OFFICIAL
Let's not forget the case of Utah linebacker/defensive end Porter Gustin. He's still out there, and he's still very interested in visiting Ohio State. The Buckeyes have kept the lines of communication wide-open and he recognizes how unique that is.
"I hear from all of them," Gustin told Eleven Warriors. "I talk to (Urban) Meyer, (Luke) Fickell, (Ed) Warinner and (Tim) Hinton. It means a lot to know how much they value me."
Gustin's true value is his versatility, and that's why the Buckeyes are still chasing him when they've stopped trying to land other linebackers. They believe Gustin can play a number of different spots on the football field.
"They said that I'd complete their defensive class," Gustin said. "I believe they'll be one of my last three visits. I think the third weekend in January is best. We're in-conference now for basketball so I don't want to miss any important Friday games. I'm double-checking. I'll probably visit USC first, then Ohio State and then Arizona State."
Gustin, 6-foot-5 and 240 pounds, is ranked as the country's 6th-best outside linebacker. He could potentially be the defensive end Ohio State has been looking for. The key? Get him on campus.
2016 DEFENSIVE END JOSH KING UPDATE
Darien, Illinois defensive end Josh King did not make it to Ohio State for The Game as he'd hoped to. His absence from Ohio State is not indicative of a drop in interest.
"I did not get a chance to go there for The Game," King told Eleven Warriors. "I started wrestling and that got in the way."
A 6-foot-6, 250-pound defensive end, King is not a stranger to Ohio State; he's been there before.
"I took a visit there earlier in the year," King said. "I honestly just loved the campus. It felt like a good place to be. It felt like it'd be a good place to live."
Last week, Ohio State's Chris Ash stopped in and checked on King at Hinsdale South High School. He's been the primary recruiter for King and it's a relationship that is continuing to grow.
"I talk to Coach Ash and their coaching staff a lot," King continued. "On a weekly basis. (Ash) is awesome. He couldn't really talk to me at the school, but it was nice to know that he stopped by to see me."
The Buckeyes see King at defensive end and he could be one of three-to-four defensive ends Ohio State hopes to sign in 2016.
JACK LENIHAN: AMERICAN HERO
In the world of college football recruiting, there might not be anything more frustrating than a high school prospect who takes himself too seriously. You see, as new media has turned recruiting into a full-time business (guilty) there has become a tendency for kids to get a bit too big for their britches. The idea that each day people from all over the country are hanging on your every word, dissecting your every highlight and begging you to go to "their school" has turned many a humble teenager into a braggadocios self-promoter.
Enter Barrington, Illinois senior wide receiver Jack Lenihan. A 5-foot-11, 160-pounder, Lenihan has produced what is likely this year's hottest highlight tapes, which he's dubbed as his "recruitment showcase."
Check it out and take a moment to appreciate this refreshing brand of humility.
