Jackson, Tennessee, University School five-star offensive tackle Trey Smith has committed to Tennessee. He made the announcement during a ceremony at his high school this afternoon, which was broadcasted live on ESPNU.
The 6-foot-6, 310-pounder is considered the fifth-best offensive tackle and the No. 25 prospect overall in the Class of 2017. He picked the Volunteers over finalists Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Ole Miss.
Smith has long been considered a lock for Tennessee, as his sister, Ashley, is head coach Butch Jones' executive assistant. The two have become very close following the death of their mother almost two years ago.
Ohio State made a late push to land Smith following the decommitment of Pomona, Colorado, four-star offensive tackle Jake Moretti roughly three weeks ago.
Smith was on campus for an official visit for the Nov. 26 game against Michigan, and the Buckeyes were even presumed to be the favorite following an in-home visit by offensive line coach Greg Studrawa last week.
Head coach Urban Meyer made an in-home visit on Monday — though actually conducted at the school— in hopes of sealing the deal. But things apparently shifted back in Tennessee's favor during his official visit this past weekend.
