Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett won't be heading to New York as a Heisman Trophy finalist this year.

Instead, Oregon's Marcus Mariota, Wisconsin's Melvin Gordon and Alabama's Amari Cooper were named the three and only finalists.

For the last month, head coach Urban Meyer has been adamant in his belief that Barrett deserved an invite to the Big Apple.

"I’ll be really disappointed if he’s not," Meyer said last week. "He’s a Heisman candidate."

Barrett, who was asked to replace the injured Braxton Miller 12 days before the team's season opener against Navy in August, was instrumental in helping the Buckeyes to a Big Ten Championship and playoff berth.

Before breaking his ankle in the team's regular-season finale against Michigan, he completed 65 percent of his throws for 2,834 and 34 touchdowns (the latter of which is a single-season school record). He also rushed for 938 and 11 touchdowns on 171 attempts.

"You dream about that stuff. ‘If only I could get there,'" Barrett said Wednesday.

"And actually, I haven’t even thought about it like, growing up, I never thought about going to the Heisman, winning the Heisman, things like that."

Ohio State plays No. 1 Alabama in the Sugar Bowl Jan. 1.
