Special teams enthusiast Frank Beamer is an unfavorable position. His Virginia Tech team is coming off a six-loss season. The silver lining to that season, however, was being the only team to defeat Ohio State, the eventual national champions.
Unfortunately for the Hokies, the upset in Columbus was only the first leg of a home-and-home series. They also are in the unfavorable position of being Ohio State's first opponent in its national title defense. (Last year, Ohio State opened with Navy while Virginia Tech hosted William & Mary.)
Beamer seemed to acknowledge his team's underdog status today during an appearance on SiriusXM 91.
From Virginia Tech football's official Twitter account:
Beamer said Ohio State is without a doubt the best team in the country. Looks forward to matchup

Well, nobody will ever accuse Frank Beamer is disrespecting his opponent. As for his own team, Frank Beamer was less superlative:
Beamer on team, "we've got a good team. Our defense is ok & we've got our quarterback back. We're capable. We'll see if we come through."

This could be a classic gambit by Beamer. Praise your opponent — make sure the public knows you know you're facing the world's best — all the while playing coy about your own team's prospects.
After all, we're still talking about a team that employs Bud Foster:
Beamer on @coachfostervt - "We've got the best defensive coordinator in the country." #Truth #Hokies

So Virginia Tech employs the best defensive coordinator in the country yet its defense is just okay? Yeah, Beamer has something over the stove down there in Blacksburg.
