After spending his day directing the newcomers to his program, sharing insight on ESPN, working with the integral veterans of the 2014 national championship team and dodging raindrops, a hoarse Urban Meyer reviewed Ohio State's first day of fall camp Monday afternoon.
Both the Big Ten Network and ESPN were on campus all day for continuing coverage of the Ohio State's first day of camp, but Meyer spent roughly 10 minutes with the local media Monday afternoon.
Updates:
- Meyer said the reason they split the freshmen and upperclassmen up for the first day is to hinder some of the "anxiety" the young guys might have: "It was a good day, but I don't have much information for you."
- Braxton Miller spent the entire practice at wide receiver, Meyer said. He also said J.T. Barrett and Cardale Jones are "fine, not much else to say."
- Meyer called Miller a "full-time" wide receiver. Said everything the former quarterback did today as far as effort is concerned, but he's just got a lot to learn as far as the position goes.
- Skill spots like cornerback or wide receiver are easier for younger players to crack the two-deep at Ohio State, Meyer said. Offensive and defensive linemen are more difficult: "The Joey Bosas of the worlds don't always come around."
- Meyer mentioned Jerome Baker, Justin Hilliard and Nick Conner as three freshmen that impressed him at linebacker Monday.
- "If you're a great player, you're not around here five years, especially skill players." - Urban Meyer
- Meyer said he wasn't sure what quarterbacks coach Tim Beck did today to figure out who got the first reps at quarterback: "We didn't do much team, though."
- More on the quarterbacks: Meyer said the snaps with the first group at quarterback are "50/50" right now. "Have we ever had something like that before? Not that I remember."
- Meyer confirmed Tyquan Lewis will start for the suspended Joey Bosa in week one. He also added Joshua Perry could see some time "if we decide to switch up our defense a bit."
- Ohio State's backup running back is Bri'onte Dunn at the moment.
- It's "borderline insanity" with how hard he and his coaches are preaching nine units strong and effort. "If we tell you to go five yards, go seven. That sort of thing."
- Meyer again reiterated he didn't want to use the word "repeat" in the conversation this season.
- Two concerns off the top of Meyer's head are replacing Devin Smith and the depth on the defensive line.
- Meyer said Miller is solely in the wide receivers room right now.
- Meyer jokingly said Jones is in his "eighth year here." He again repeated he doesn't plan to name a starter until the season opener at Virginia Tech Sept. 7.
