Mike Vrabel will not be joining Chip Kelly as his defensive coordinator in San Francisco.
The Houston Texans linebackers coach, who last played competitively in 2010 and was Ohio State's defensive line coach less than two years ago, interviewed for the 49ers DC job on Tuesday.
The 49ers took roughly 24 hours before offering Vrabel the job over former Browns coach Eric Mangini.
Vrabel took a little over 24 hours in his decision to decline to promotion. Pro Football Talk was the first to report the news.
Vrabel will stay on as Bill O'Brien's staff after reportedly deciding being a DC opposite a high-octane offense wasn't the best career move. Hard to argue with that.
