That feeling of existential dread you feel when a game goes into overtime would be warranted for most other teams, but the Buckeyes have free football on lockdown.

Since their first ever overtime game, a 23-16 single overtime victory at Illinois way back in the heady days of 2002, Ohio State now stands with a 9-2 overall record in extra time. Interestingly, only four of those games have been played in Ohio Stadium (although the Buckeyes won all of those) and the last three games, all wins, have been played on the road against either Penn State or Wisconsin.

Here's a handy chart to see how Ohio State has done in overtime over the years:

Season Opponent Win/Loss Overtime periods final score
2002 @Illinois W 1 23-16
2002 Miami W 2 31-24
2003 NC State W 3 44-38
2003 Purdue W 1 16-13
2004 @Northwestern L 1 27-33
2009 Iowa W 1 37-24
2011 @Purdue L 1 23-26
2012 Purdue W 1 29-22
2012 @Wisconsin W 1 21-14
2014 @Penn State W 2 31-24
2016 @Wisconsin W 1 30-23

I'll admit, I was shaking in my boots last night. But as a student of history, I shouldn't have been, because more often than not, the Buckeyes pull it out when the stakes are highest.
