Heading into Thursday night, head coach Kevin McGuff had never beaten the Hawkeyes in Iowa City. That's no longer the case, as the Buckeyes downed Iowa 98-81.
Team | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | Final |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Ohio State | 28 | 25 | 30 | 15 | 98 |
Iowa | 15 | 24 | 23 | 19 | 81 |
In what's becoming a theme for this team, everyone contributed. Five players scored in double figures – Kelsey Mitchell (20), Shayla Cooper (20), Ameryst Alston (18), Alexa Hart (13), Asia Doss (12) – and the team shot a stellar 58 percent from the field.
Coming off the bench, Cooper was huge for the Buckeyes. The junior scored a game-high 20 points, shooting 8 for 11 from the field, and pulled down 7 rebounds.
Hart was a force in the paint, as well. The sophomore forward scored 13 points and swatted a game-high five shots. She also led the team with three steals.
In the back court, the Buckeyes were dominant, as usual. Mitchell led the team with 20 points, Doss had a career high seven assists, and Alston scored her 2,000th career point.
The win is Ohio State's first win in Iowa City since 2008 – no current Buckeye player had seen victory on the Hawkeyes' court until Thursday.
Next up for the Buckeyes is a road test against Penn State. The Nittany Lions are unranked, but they're coming off an upset of No. 17 Michigan State. Ohio State sits atop the Big Ten standings and should expect to get every team's best shot going forward.
