Paramedics on the scene at Ohio State's annual Mirror Lake jump identified a man suffering cardiac arrest early Wednesday morning. The raucous celebration was then immediately shutdown by the university.
Despite "several hours" of intense medical care, the then-unknown man perished a few hours later. After asking the public for information, Ohio State police say they've identified the deceased as Austin Singletary, a third-year student from Dayton, Ohio. According to a Facebook post from the organization, Singletary was a Ohio State Social Change Site Leader at Eastgate Elementary.
In the wake of Singletary's death, Ohio State said it will work to end the unofficially official student tradition.
