Ohio State identified the man who lost his life early Wednesday after Mirror Lake jump as Austin Singletary, a third-year student from Centerville, Ohio. Our prayers are with Austin's family.
The Mirror Lake jump, an annual anti-Michigan tradition Ohio State fans have come to know and love, looks like it will be coming to an end.
Paramedics pulled a man suffering cardiac arrest from the man-made pond early Wednesday morning. Despite the instant medical care, the man died a few hours later.
Statement from Ohio State University President Michael V. Drake
“We are heartbroken over this horrible tragedy. We have tentatively identified the young man as a student and are in the process of reaching out to his family. During this difficult time, counseling services will be made available throughout the holiday weekend for those who seek support,” said President Michael V. Drake.Statement from The Ohio State University
In spite of significant efforts taken to make this event a safer one, this tragedy has occurred. We must come together and acknowledge that while this is a student-led tradition that has been passed down through the years, we cannot risk another tragedy. University leadership strongly agrees that we will work with our campus community to end this annual event.
Abby Grossman and Abby Waidelich, the President and Vice President of Ohio State's student government, are in favor of shutting down the tradition as well:
