The OSU Club Boxing team sent four fighters to the NCBA nationals in Charlotte, NC this weekend: Eddie Kubit (165# men), Carmen Pape (156# women), Ella Yi (132# women) and Nicoleta Durlesteanu (112# women).
Fights began Thursday, and the Buckeye Boxers came out swinging but ultimately came up short on the day. Eddie Kubit lost his first round fight to Samuel Jein of UConn in a 4:1 decision. Jein moved on to the championship bout where he’ll face a Midshipman from the Naval Academy.
Friday night, however, OSU won both its bouts with Durlesteanu and Pape advancing to national championship fights Saturday night.
Facing a boxer from the Air Force Academy, Nicoletta scored a huge win with a stoppage in the second round. She advances to the National Championship fight against Cadet Daisy Terrones from Army West Point. Terrones is the reigning National Champion in the women’s 112 pound class. They are first on the 6 pm card tonight, and it should be a great fight.
Pape won a unanimous decision in a three-round brawl with Navy’s Camille Johnson. It was an exhausting fight that left both fighters struggling down the last minute. Carmen’s opponent in the championship round is Cadet Emmanuella Epiuwhe from Army West Point. They will be fifth on the 3 pm card this afternoon.
