Need to vent about some of the commentary I’ve read today. Obviously everyone is mad and sad and embarrassed about the L. Truly no excuses this year.

Plenty of Buckeye fans are calling for Day to be fired. That’s plenty fair.

What bothers me, though, is when fans talk about coaches (or players) in a way that literally comes off like if I were making the decisions we would’ve won. I wish there was a way to let people try (“Here’s the headset. Have at it!”). I literally saw a tweet today from a former 11W writer that said “every coach in America is a moron.” Oof.

It’s become clear that a decent chunk of fans think Day lost the game because he lacks the depth of knowledge that they — a casual fan who watched a couple 11W Film Studies — posses (although in fairness I bet the Film Study audience is much less emotional and dense). As if Day doesn’t also have things he would do differently with the benefit of hindsight. As if Day (or any other power 5 coach) hasn’t dedicated 1000x more hours to understanding what it takes to win a football game than someone who played in high school (maybe college too!) and hasn’t made a decision of consequence in the sport in 15 years. This attitude is a total lack of perspective and humility and I find myself embarrassed for fans who think it’s at all reasonable.

Be frustrated. Call for Day’s firing. Question play calling (albeit with the benefit of hindsight!). Tell us what you’d do differently, but man, layer in some perspective. When you talk like you believe Day is an actual idiot and that you’d do a better job than someone who’s a top 20 coach, you're making the rest of us cringe.
