Marc Givler has reported on Twitter that OSU is not currently planning to utilize the impending scholarship limit adjustment. This adjustment will increase the total max scholarships from 85 up to 105.
This change is a result of the court case that will be finalized before the 2025 season that will also see revenue sharing being given to football players(Max pool of $20.5 million per school to be split evenly.) At 85 players this is about $240k each and at 105 it’s 195k each. Schools will also be allowed increase scholarships used up to 105.
However Givler reported OSU will not be utilizing most of the extra scholarships for a few reasons. First is due to difficulty in maintaining players and by adding more they will likely just face more attrition. Second is in order to focus both NIL and revenue sharing on a smaller number of players.
This certainly seems questionable at best. OSU has a few positions that have been poorly recruited/developed like OL and DL. Instead of taking 3 man OL classes they could take 6 or 7 yearly and focus on development. Instead of focusing on the NIL values they could also use the extra scholarships on 3 star caliber players that would be ok spending a few years developing at OSU.
To me this seems like a rule that explicitly helps programs like OSU who can use their prestige to bring in players that will be ok coming into a competitive environment. Ryan Day and Co were also slow to use the transfer portal and having an NIL fund put in place. Seems like they will also be slow in using this new rule
