Every amateur athlete's dream.
The Blues' backup goalie was hurt. The player they were bringing up from the AHL couldn't get there by game time.
Stewart played on the club team at Saint Louis University. He got a call from the Blues on Thursday after he had already finished his shift working for a vending machine company.
He is a Blues season ticket holder. He got to participate in pregame warmups.
“I got to listen to the pregame speech with [Mike] Yeo,” Stewart said. “It’s crazy how loose they are. You would think they’d be tight a little, but they’re joking around like you wouldn’t even think they’re playing a hockey game. It’s a cool environment, nothing like I’d ever experienced before.
“I sat next to Tarasenko. He was awesome. Him and [Vladimir] Sobotka were asking me how to spell scissors because they were confused about the spelling. They were saying it as Caesar, like Caesar salad. It was pretty funny. They just talked to me like I was one of the guys. It was pretty cool.”
Stewart wore jersey No. 98 and a plain white mask to take part in warm-ups, his first save coming against Vladimir Tarasenko, who whacked his pads with his stick to say “nice job.”
The AHL goalie arrived towards the end of the 1st period and his dream was over. But what a day!
