On the eve of Super Bowl LII, here's a quick seven question quiz to test your Ohio State Super Bowl knowledge.
As a twist, the answers are not included. The questions are difficult, but give it your best try and write your answers in the comment section. Please include the number of the question(s) you are answering.
I will post the answers at 6:30 tonight and give credit to the person who was first to correctly answer each question in the comment section.
The questions are difficult, but I have faith the 11W community will do better than these Jeopardy contestants.
1) Can you name the Ohio State running back who became the first Buckeye to get a ring when his team shocked the Colts, and the world, in Super Bowl III?
2) Who is the only Buckeye to be named Super Bowl MVP?
3) Can you name the two Ohio State players who have the most Super Bowls starts?
4) Who was the last Buckeye to start on a winning Super Bowl team?
5) Can you name the last Ohio State player to be on the roster of a winning Super Bowl team?
6) How many different Buckeyes have started a Super Bowl?
(Hint, if a player has started multiple times he only counts once. Also, don't count Malcolm Jenkins because he hasn't started yet.)
7) What is the total number of appearances for Ohio State players on Super Bowl rosters?
(Hint, this time if a former Buckeye has multiple appearances each and every one counts.)
Answers are below the Jenkins jerseys.
1) Can you name the Ohio State running back who became the first Buckeye to get a ring when his team shocked the Colts, and the world, in Super Bowl III?
Answer: SoulPatrol32 knew that Matt Snell started at running back for the underdog Jets. He finished the game with 30 carries, 121 yards and a touchdown. Snell also caught four passes for 40 yards.
Fun fact: Jim Tyrer was the first Ohio State player to start in a Super Bowl. Tyrer started at LT in the Super Bowl I, but his Chiefs lost to Vince Lombardi and the Packers 35-10.
2) Who is the only Buckeye to be named Super Bowl MVP?
Answer: SoulPatrol32 correctly came up with Santonio Holmes. The stand-out wide receiver earned the honor when his last-second touchdown catch was the game-winner against the Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII.
3) Can you name the two Ohio State players who have the most Super Bowls starts?
Answer: Hovenaut, Lamplighter and SoulPatrol32 worked together and figured out that Jim Marshall and Mike Vrabel both started in four Super Bowls. Marshall had his starts with the Minnesota Vikings in the 1970s and Vrabel had his starts with the New England Patriots. Paul Warfield and Bob Brudzinski are second with three Super Bowl starts.
4) Who was the last Buckeye to start on a winning Super Bowl team?
Answer: Hovenaut's guess of Jake Ballard was correct. He started at TE for the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLVI. The Giants beat the New England Patriots 21-17 in 2012.
5) Can you name the last Buckeye to be on the roster of a Super Bowl winning team?
Answer: SoulPatrol32 knew that Nate Ebner was on the roster for New England in last year's 34-28 victory over the Atlanta Falcons.
6) How many different Buckeyes have started a Super Bowl?
(Hint, if a player has started multiple times he only counts once. Also, don't count Malcolm Jenkins because he hasn't started yet.)
Answer: 30 different Ohio State players have started a Super Bowl and they have 44 combined starts. Buckeye Super Bowl starters have a combined record of 19–25. Malcolm Jenkins should become the 31st and 45th tomorrow evening.
7) What is the total number of appearances for Ohio State players on Super Bowl rosters?
(Hint, this time if a former Buckeye has multiple appearances each and every one counts.)
Answer: Ohio State players have appeared 79 times on Super Bowl rosters. The Buckeyes are a combined 37–42 in the big game. The number Ohio State players will increase to 80 tomorrow. Hopefully the win number will increase as well.
Only four Buckeyes were on a Super Bowl team and did not see playing time. Those players were Pete Johnson (MIA, SB XIX), John Frank (SF, SB XIX), Mike Tomczak (PIT, SB XXX) and Joe Germaine (STL, SB XXXIV).
However, Frank and Tomczak did see the field in different Super Bowls. Frank started for the 49ers in Super Bowl XXIII and Tomczak saw time in the Bears' blow-out win of the Patriots in Super Bowl XX.
