Urban Meyer Suggested the Browns Hire Fired Buccs Coach Greg Schiano

Buried in Mary Kay Cabot's article on the discord among Browns executives in today's Cleveland Plain Dealer is this interesting nugget (emphasis mine):

Against Banner's wishes, the Browns left the Senior Bowl and flew to Tampa to interview [Greg] Schiano, who was coming off a scandal-rocked 4-12 season. The year was marred by a MRSA outbreak in the locker room and a public battle between the team and quarterback Josh Freeman. At the time, the interview looked like a favor for a coach down on his luck, but it was more than that. Haslam listened to the recommendations of [Patriot's coach Bill] Belichick and Ohio State coach Urban Meyer, and overrode his CEO's opinion. Others in the organization were also on board with talking to Schiano.

I get it; Belichick is still bitter about getting the axe in Cleveland and this is his way of making sure the Browns are moribund for the the next three decades.

I also get that Urban Meyer has more football knowledge in three brain cells than I've harvested in my entire life, BUT WHAT THE HELL, URBZ? Greg Schiano? I would be in prison by now if that hire had went down.

The whole article is a fascinating look at Joe Banner's and Mike Lombardi's final weeks in Cleveland, so it's worth checking out if you're a Browns fan (or just like looking at the aftermath of massive trainwrecks).

Just thought it was an interesting tidbit.
