Saturday was not a good day to be one of the top-ranked teams in college basketball.
All of the top six teams in the AP Top 25 suffered losses as seven total top-10 teams suffered losses on the same day for the first time in college basketball history.
No. 1 Gonzaga suffered just its third loss of the season as it was upset by No. 23 Saint Mary’s, 67-57.
No. 2 Arizona suffered a double-digit loss to an unranked opponent as the Wildcats were defeated by Colorado, 79-63.
No. 3 Auburn suffered a 67-62 loss to No. 17 Tennessee, while No. 4 Purdue suffered a 68-65 loss to unranked Michigan State.
No. 5 Kansas fell to No. 10 Baylor, 80-70, while No. 6 Kentucky lost 75-73 to No. 18 Arkansas. No. 9 Texas Tech lost 69-66 to unranked TCU.
All seven losses came on the opponents’ home courts.
The only top-10 teams to score victories on Saturday were No. 7 Duke, who blew out Syracuse 97-72, and Baylor over Kansas. No. 8 Villanova did not play on Saturday, though it too suffered a loss (71-69 to No. 21 Connecticut) in its most recent game.
If Saturday was any indication, this year’s NCAA Tournament could be as chaotic as ever, as every team in the country looks capable of being upset going into March.
