A lot of hand-wringing has gone on in Columbus over the 2014 Ohio State defense. It appears, however, some of that could be warranted in East Lansing as well.
Here's Michigan State defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi, via CoachingSearch.com:
The Spartan defense has been in the top-10 in scoring defense in three straight years, and Narduzzi won the Broyles Award last season. Maybe it’s a motivational tool to keep players from being overconfident, or maybe he really doesn’t like what he sees.
“Really, nothing has impressed me about these guys right now,” he said in the spring episode of Spartan Football: All-Access. “I’m impressed with some returning starters and how they progressed through the year, but when you talk about defense, it’s 11 guys doing things you want to do. Is their hustle impressive? Not yet. Is their knowledge impressive? Not yet. The total talent on the field is not impressive, but it will be. We’ll get it to where we want it to be, but it’s not where we want it to be.”
Given his results, it's tough to wager against Narduzzi. But yet, success is often the enemy of improvement.
