Illinois fired bad human Tim Beckman a week before its season started. Offensive coordinator Bill Cubit was given reign of the charred remains.
The Illinois are 5-6 with a chance to ensure bowl eligibility this Saturday against Northwestern.
Cubit may literally be coaching for his job.
From collegefootballtalk.com:
Illinois will decide whether or not to retain interim head coach Bill Cubit for the full-time job by Sunday, interim AD Paul Kowalczyk told WSKJ-FM Wednesday.
“We need to make that call and figure out which way we’re going for everyone’s sake,” Kowalczyk said, via the Chicago Tribune. “For me, it’s posthaste.”
In dating, you only have to be better than the last person your partner dated. Cubit is certainly better than the last guy. Could Illinois do better? Sure, but it's going to be a seller's market this carousel season and Illinois is nowhere near the top in terms of desirability.
Cubit is ultimately only a stopgap, but he's kept the Illinois respectable and, again, he isn't Tim Beckman. Perhaps it's best to let Cubit (pending he doesn't get Illinois' ass drilled by the Wildcats) right the ship before the Illinois hire a longer-term solution.
