When it comes down to it, there isn't much difference between drug addicts and sports fans except the legality of their hobby. People will do insane things to acquire the drugs their body requires. Sports fans will do insane things because they've become connected to something they feel is bigger than themselves.
For an example of the latter, we turn to the tee of Hole 10 at Birmingham's Greystone Golf & Country Club during a pro-am golf tournament featuring reigning champion Nick Saban on Wednesday.
From our nation's paper of record, al.com:
"Where did you find this?" [professional golfer Rocco Mediate] shouts across the tee box to the owner. It was a candle that first appeared to be The Sacred Heart of Jesus typically found in Catholic homes. The only difference, Saban's face instead of Jesus.
"I promise I'm a good Catholic girl," she hollers back, saying it was a Father's Day present. She found it at a store in Pelham. That was a first, Saban's daughter said. Everything from end zone pylons to baseballs and college-ruled spiral notebooks were handed over for a signature Wednesday.
