Cancelations have officially hit the FBS.
UConn, newly Independent after leaving the American Athletic Conference last month, became the first FBS program to cancel its fall football season on Wednesday morning.
"After receiving guidance from state and public health officials and consulting with football student-athletes, we've decided that we will not compete on the gridiron this season," director of athletics David Benedict said. "The safety challenges created by COVID-19 place our football student-athletes at an unacceptable level of risk."
UConn's players will remain enrolled in classes (either virtually or in person), as full-time students and will also have access to facilities and support services in accordance with NCAA rules.
The team's games against Illinois, Indiana, Maine and Mississippi were already canceled due to moves to conference-only schedules, and games against North Carolina and Virginia seemed likely with the ACC's shift to a "10 plus one" schedule.
