Iowa will be without its head coach Week 1.

Kirk Ferentz and Iowa wide receivers coach Jon Budmayr will each serve a one-game suspension during the Hawkeyes' season opener against Illinois State on Aug. 31 for recruiting violations, per The Athletic

Per the report, the recruiting violations stem from Iowa courting quarterback Cade McNamara before the transfer portal officially opened in 2022. While Iowa has been the subject of an NCAA investigation, it's unclear whether the suspension is being imposed by the NCAA or Iowa.

McNamara, a former Michigan quarterback, entered the transfer portal on Nov. 28. He committed to Iowa on Dec. 1. He's battling former Northwestern quarterback Brendan Sullivan in fall camp for the team's starting gig this season.
