Earlier this week, Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany was named the most influential person in college athletics by a panel of college sports officials put together by CBS. The influence doesn't stop there; it continues to the BMOC at Ohio State and Duke.
Men's basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski and football coach Urban Meyer were named most influential, in a tie. Their influence is no doubt tied to winning championships (five for Coach K, three for Meyer) but also their ability to challenge regulations and change the tone of discussions in their sports.
The top ten in the way of coaching:
Rank | Coach |
---|---|
T-1 | Mike Krzyzewski |
T-1 | Urban Meyer |
3 | Nick Saban |
4 | John Calipari |
5 | Tom Izzo |
6 | Roy Williams |
7 | All P5 football coaches |
8 | Jim Harbaugh |
9 | Bill Snyder |
10 | Mark Richt |
Meyer and Krzyzewski also cracked the top 25 list for most influential people in college sports, tied for 11th. OSU athletic director Gene Smith, though not on the top 25 list, was named the sixth-most influential AD.
