Continuing the shock rock tradition pioneered by Cleveland's own Screamin' Jay Hawkins and England's Arthur Brown, Alice Cooper released his second solo album, "Alice Cooper Goes To Hell", today in 1976. After the break up of the Alice Cooper band, Cooper struck out on his own and aimed to bring a more theatrical flair to his music.
Building on the themes of his previous album, "Welcome To My Nightmare", Cooper continued to tell the semi-autobiographical tale of Steven. Where as "Nightmare" was reflective of Steven's nightmares, "Goes To Hell", is a bit more personal with several references to Cooper's already out of control alcoholism.
Thankfully, Cooper has kept his demons at bay while still expressing them onstage to this day. "Goes To Hell" is a good mix of rocking number and a few tinged with funk or disco and is and is well worth a listen for anyone who enjoyed the music of the Alice Cooper band.
