We had just returned from a week doing ELINT ops up on the Kuwaiti border and were trying to catch up on our sleep. Gunny C. woke us up announcing "Gentlemen that sound you hear is B-52s on the way to bomb Iraq". 

I remember listening for a moment the night was indeed filled with the sound of jet aircraft (but probably not B-52s directly over the NE corner of Saudi where we were). Not finding it to be high on my list of immediate priorities, I rolled over and promptly fell back asleep. 

It wasn't until two weeks later that we first engaged the Iraqis directly when they came across the border at Khafji and a month until we entered Kuwait to finish the war.
