60 years ago, those of us who are of a certain age were herded into school gyms across the land to watch Ohio's John Glenn ride fire into space and become the first American to orbit the Earth.

Emotions ranged from fear and apprehension to cheers and pride as we huddled around small black and white televisions set up on the gym stage. It was a moment in time when Ohio indeed led the way.
