Phil Bucklew may not be a name many fans of football in Columbus may have heard of, despite delivering 2 national championships to Columbus. He played for the AFL's Columbus Bullies, and was coaching them on December,7, 1941. When the team heard of the attack, they went to a bar and decided to sign up. Bucklew wound up in the amphibious commandos, conducting recons of beaches prior to landings, amongst other missions. He went on to train and command other units and was put in command of Seal Team One by President Kennedy, and eventually established the career progression for Navy special operations personnel.
