For those of you unfamiliar with the concept, an emotional hedge bet is when you make a wager on a team you absolutely despise to win a big game so, if in fact they are victorious, the anger you feel over their victory is somewhat diminished by the fact that you turned a nice profit. And, should the team lose, the joy and relief you feel at them going down in flames cancels out much of the emotional pain of the financial loss.
I’ve made some medium sized emotional hedge bets in the past, but the prospect of UM winning it all is so upsetting, especially in light of all that’s happened over the last few months, that I’m seriously considering plunking down some major cash by my standards to dull the pain should they walk off the field with a NC on Monday.
