Is It Worth It to Be a College HC Anymore?

  • Saban Retired
  • Hafley to Green Bay as a Coordinator
  • Harbaugh to Chargers (ya, I know) with much of his staff
  • Chip Kelley taking an OC from a HC position in LA
  • Several talented but out of work coaches not wanting to go to CFB as HC (Vrabel comes to mind)
  • I'm sure there are other examples

It makes me wonder with all that a HC has to do these days (NIL and all the collectives, stroking teenagers and boosters egos, deciding what color the alternate shoes are going to be, media responsibilities) in addition to the recruiting and actual football responsibilities, it leaves little time for family, actual coaching and designing of schemes, self-care etc, is it worth it? Will we see more and more people either burn out quickly trying to do it all or just bolt for the NFL. Will the leadership at the college level decline quickly?

Or what other factors could change just as quickly to make it attractive again?

Staff positions to help manage it all? A shift in NIL toward keeping proven players rather than going to HS recruits?

What would make it an attractive gig for a talented guy or is it just a swing at a good paycheck until you can move to something you love again?
