At the end of the fall sports period, Ohio State was a distant 22nd with only 187.5 points, 317 points behind #1 Stanford and 5th among B1G schools.
By the end of the winter sports period, Ohio State had surged to #2 and closed the gap behind #1 Stanford to 268.75 points. In doing so, the Buckeyes blew past Penn State, Michigan and Wisconsin, which currently stand 3rd, 4th and 5th, respectively, and Michigan State, which fell from 19th to 43rd. Counting #10 Minnesota and #12 Nebraska, the B1G has a shot at putting five and possibly as many as six schools in the final Top 10; however, that looks to be a tall order considering Southern and Western schools are generally stronger in baseball, softball, golf, tennis, and track and field.
Stanford is in the process of winning its 23rd consecutive Learfield Director's Cup. Unfortunately, catching the Cardinal is virtually impossible considering spring has historically been its best sports season due to its strength in the so-called "country club" sports (golf, tennis and water polo), as well as baseball and track & field; however, Ohio State has a very good shot at claiming its second consecutive runner-up finish with strong post-season performances in men's lacrosse (currently ranked #7), women's rowing (#5), softball (#36), men's tennis (#2), women's tennis (#4), and men's volleyball (#2).
People can say whatever they want about Gene Smith but even his harshest critics would have to agree that Buckeye Nation is experiencing an unprecedented era in all-around sports excellence.
