Checking out the post game comments after the basketball team had me thinking about Matta's legacy here. It seems pretty divisive, people get labeled Matta haters or apologists. Thad Matta's accomplishments are undeniable: 5 Big Ten regular season titles, 4 Big Ten tournament titles, 2 final fours. Really the only thing missing is a national title and the 07 squad was plenty good enough to win a title, they just ran into one of the best teams of their era while having a bad shooting day.
However, Matta left the program in horrible condition. His entire 2015 recruiting class was gone after two years and not to the NBA. They either transferred or were kicked off the team. His 2016 class was extremely weak with little contributions to the program. Basically two empty classes in a row. He missed the NCAA tournament two years in a row, and in his final year they failed to even make the NIT.
Contrast this with Urban Meyer, nearly unanimously loved (despite a few mistakes) because of all his accomplishments paired with leaving the program in great shape. Meyer stated how important that aspect was to him.
My question is this: Does the condition he left the program in hurt Matta's legacy in a significant way? Or do focus on the amazing run he had and the things he accomplished?
