While the Nuggets try to close out the Heat to win the NBA championship, imagine for a moment that the league announces an expansion team for the 2023-24 season.
The new roster will only include former and current Ohio State players, and all of them are in the primes of their professional careers. To be eligible, the individual must have appeared in at least one NBA game in the past three decades. Here’s what the squad looks like.
PG: Mike Conley (All-Star)
SG: Michael Redd (All-Star)
SF: Jim Jackson
PF: Herb Williams
C: Greg Oden
6th Man: D’Angelo Russell (All-Star)
Bench: Tony Campbell
Bench: Derek Anderson
Bench: Jae'Sean Tate
Bench: Evan Turner
Bench: Malaki Branham
Bench: Lawrence Funderburke
Bench: Keita Bates-Diop
Bench: Byron Mullens
Bench: Jared Sullinger
The team is headlined by a trio of lefty All-Star guards; Conley runs the point, while the Brooklyn version of Russell operates as one of the most overqualified sixth men ever. Redd and Jackson - both of whom had a season in which they averaged 25 points a game - is among the best wing duos in the sport.
Williams being a non-shooter makes the spacing slightly awkward, but his ability to score in the post adds some more diversity to the offense. He cleans the glass alongside Oden, who was well on his way to a great career before injuries derailed it.
Only 10 NBA players finished the 1989-90 campaign with more points than Campbell. Anderson could light it up in his day, as well. This squad would not be some defensive juggernaut, but scoring will hardly be an issue.
Perhaps the most valuable aspect of getting all of these Buckeyes at their peaks is the depth that it provides. Every member of the bench has experience playing a significant role in a rotation.
There are no bona fide superstars on the team, but it’s one of the most complete rosters in the league. Does this group have enough to win an NBA title?
