Doing my usual freudenschade sleuthing after a big win, I'm just shocked by the narrative coming out of PSU's side. Here's the breakdown:
1. If MHJ were playing for PSU, they win this game
I find this one especially hilarious. If you give us your best offensive player than we would be a better offense than you. I've never lost a big game and thought about saying out loud, you know what, if we would have Trevor Lawrence played for us actually we would have easily won. It's very odd, but I consider the actual question. Would they have won if Marv was lining up for them. To me, their biggest problem was their line was getting caved in all night. MHJ could've gotten open all day but if Allar had no time to throw it, it wouldn't make a difference. But then the other side of that is without MHJ, they assume our offense basically doesn't score. I guess in this fantasy world, EE is also injured and the same schemes that got Marv open do not work for any other of our several 5 star WR's.
2. We didn't win, PSU blew it and they should've won this game
The entire week I had heard from the PSU side that if it was going to happen it was this year. Buy why? According to them, this is the closest they've been talent-wise to OSU. I can see why you might think this, a five-star QB and several defensive stars, but actually, it's not true. The biggest difference for them this year is a first-year 5 star QB, but even so the talent gap has not significantly shifted in PSU's favor this year; this is an imagined narrative.
But again, let's consider the statement. In what world do you on one hand convert 1/16 on third downs, play a total of 10 snaps in the opponent's territory, never cross the red zone until a minute left in the game, and down two scores, have SIX yards in the entire second half before this garbage time drive, but also you state confidently that you "should've won it?"
3. If the scoop and score doesn't get called back, they win
Apparently, being down 7 points would have sent us reeling. Kyle would've crumbled, there's no way we could dig out way back out, Marv very well may have declared for the draft at halftime. Who's to say that specific sequence wouldn't have kicked of a 35 point scoring frenzy for OSU? It's just so dumb. There's also contention about the timing of the penalty. They're saying that the fumble occurred before the hold and therefore should've stood. First of all, on the TV copy I never saw a side-by-side showing the order of that sequence but either way, Klatt even explained that the back judge was not aware at all of the action going on with the fumble. Clearly the action was at worst, simultaneous.
4. If they just would've kept running, they would've won
I even heard this echoed a bit on the OSU beat which I don't find entirely surprising seeing as just how bad the OSU beat reporters are, but I digress. They specifically reference the drive with those two 15-yard runs by PSU that were followed by a sack and two incompletions. I kind of get it, but this completely ignores the fact that outside of those two rushes, there were 24 other attempts that in total netted them a cool NINE YARDS. That is a back-breaking .37 ypc. I truly wonder if we could've survived the onslaught of 10 additional rushing attempts from the nit-witney lions.
5. OSU is going to get killed by UM
Salty, sore losers. We shall see, we shall see.
