The majority of the conversation since Saturday has been us complaining about Day's game plan running the ball into the teeth of Michigan's defense, their one and only strength. We have said that he has NFL receivers and questioned why he didn't use them.
While it was obvious that Day kept doing something that wasn't working (running up the middle) and we wanted him to pass more, did we forget how bad our passing game looked? I was at the game and when Howard had that early pick, I had deja vu of McCord gifting them a TD on that side of the field but then the optimistic side of me had a sigh of relief, because I know he usually has one of these per game and thought he was getting it out of the way early. Then he did it again later in the game and I realized "oh he's just conveniently going to play his worst game of the season today". But how many times did Will Howard miss receivers on rollouts? There were also so many times I saw Henderson open in the flats and he wouldn't take it. I saw another where Inniss was wide open for a touchdown on a post pattern and he just didn't even see him.
JJ did not even have a single target the entire second half.
Not to mention this makeshift O-line being on something like its third iteration and Howard had pressure in his face all game, which was forcing him to rollout so much. We can question the lack of creativity, but between the o-line breaking down (I wonder if Day saw this in practice all week) and Howard having a terrible game, was passing the ball just not seen as safe?
