Short of somehow pulling a rabbit out of a hat and getting the OSU OL to play to a championship level (and winning a championship), I think it's safe to say that this season is Justin Frye's last. The debacle in the Game, followed by a near-disastrous recruiting haul on the line, should make it clear that it's Frye's job or Day's in 2025. Assuming his contract is not renewed, who do you think we should go after for the position coach role? Who would be your dream pick?
Some thoughts of mine:
Steve Addazio seems like a no-brainer: Day was his OC at both Temple and BC, and while Coach Daz didn't pan out as a head coach, his own experience as an HC and OC for Urban Meyer will serve him well as a trusted advisor to Day. Also, the man coached two absolute road-grading units that won Natties, so the guy knows what a championship line looks like (and how to recruit to one). I believe he doesn't have a buyout, which makes him quite cost-effective as well.
Tim Drevno has the benefit of having been on staff this year, meaning existing players know who he is and he knows the system we run. He's also worked with Kelly before, so the two are sympatico in the scheme department. Drevno also has experience as a coordinator and helped coach some elite lines at both the collegiate and NFL levels. His downside is that the current disaster of a line is happening under his watch, but then again, he's a QC coach, not even a position coach, so who's to say how much of the struggles can be directly put on his shoulders?
Ed Warinner - Have I reached the bargaining stage of grief that I'd welcome Ed back to Columbus? The man shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a playsheet on gameday, but arguable nobody did more with less than Warinner, transforming two converted D-linemen and a tight end into competent tackles and putting a pair of three-stars into the NFL. He was the architect of our last national championship OL, for what it's worth. The reason I think he deserves consideration is because while he was never a great recruiter (not like it takes much to be a better recruiter than Justin Frye), he truly maximized his talent on hand. And with the absolutely bare cupboard we're staring at in the wake of Frye's recruiting failures over the past three years, we're going to need someone who can coach and develop the hell out of the kids left on the roster.
Your thoughts?
