We thought we heard the end of the OSU versus the SEC debate after the Arkansas and Alabama victories, but since Day took over, it seems to be a making a comeback. This is especially true now with the Tennessee game coming up. I see all kinds of posts about it, mostly from TN and Michigan fans of course. This is not a regular game, it is in Columbus, so what is OSU's record against SEC teams in Columbus?
The last time an SEC team visited Columbus was in 1988, unranked OSU vs #7 LSU. I remember that game fondly, it was one of the greatest comebacks in OSU history. LSU scored a TD to go up 33-20 with 4:29 remaining in the game. I remember thinking after a Time Out, around the 2:31 mark, and the ball on the LSU 24-yard line, "this game is over". Two plays later, OSU was in the endzone to bring the score to 33-27 with 1:56 left.
Everybody expected the onside kick, but Cooper, kicked the ball off, and was betting OSU could get the stop, and he was right, they did. With 1:38 left, and OSU in punt-block formation, LSU took the intentional safety. Now the score was 33-29, and OSU to receive the ball with 1:38 left.
Bobby Olive received the punt at the OSU 32-yard line and returned it to the LSU 39. Frey was on fire, every bit as much as JT was in 2017 versus PSU. He completed a 16-yard pass Jeff Graham (1:18 remaining). Carlos Snow caught a 3-yard pass, then on 3rd and 7, Frey hit Olive on a diving 21-yard TD pass in the endzone. Buckeyes win.
Since that time, the SEC has never returned to the Horseshoe (although Mizzou did as a member of the Big12), at least until December 21st this year of 2024. Let's hope history repeats itself. Oh, the record of sec teams in Columbus? 1-5, or 5-16 if you include Missouri, A&M, TX, and OK. Here is the list of SEC teams who have played in Columbus.
