I think all of us were a little taken aback by Day’s statement of rotating guards for tomorrow night. Well, today we got the answer for as to why that rotation is a thing. According to Zach Boren, Siereveld was nursing an injury from the Michigan game and hadn’t practiced for the past couple of weeks. It sounds like he will be available to play against Tennessee but won’t be 100%.
So what was likely to have been a Jackson, Montgomery, Hinzmann, Siereveld, and Fryar line will now feature Tegra instead of Siereveld, at least to start the game. If Tegra continues to underperform, I will expect him to get a quick hook. I think this could have been solved by having a Montgomery, Padilla, and Hinzmann interior, but the coaching staff must not trust Padilla at center yet.
I am still anxious about the line, but at least we have an answer for the rationale rather than thinking the coaches were just running experiments in the biggest game of the year.
