I had mentioned this in a previous post - and several people asked me to post it. I went down a math rabbit hole a few nights back and waste way too much time compiling data about every Ohio State coach going back through Woody Hayes first season (except Luke Fickell - I don't think he counts, and his one season is useless as a data point).
Below you will find every coaches record v Top 5, v Top 10, Overall, v TTUN, # Big Titles, # Nattys (record in the modern era). I don't want to give much exposition - because the point was just to share the data. I WILL point out a couple things though:
-Not every Hayes Natty is recognized by the AP.
-There were SIGNIFICANTLY less Bowl games in the Hayes, Bruce, and even Cooper era.
-Most of Hayes seasons were 9 games regular season and featured almost no games that would be considered v non-power-5.
-College football wasn't as top heavy as it is today until probably the mid-late 90's.
-I only gave W/L for Natty's in the BCS and later era. Before this it would be too difficult, and somewhat subjective, to say which lost bowls would have resulted in a Natty if won.
-I highlighted Day in the bottom graph for comparison's sake.
